The Abarca Pond is located within the municipality of Abarca de Campos, in the province of Palencia, alongside the Canal de Castilla on its Campos Branch. It is situated on the left bank of the canal, just after the aqueduct that spans the Valdeginate River and near the first lock of the branch, forming part of one of the canal’s most representative hydraulic systems.
This wetland originated as a consequence of the construction and operation of the Castile Canal between the 18th and 19th centuries. The excavation of the canal bed and its barrier effect altered the natural drainage of the land, favoring the accumulation of water and the appearance of marshy areas that, over time, became naturalized.
The Abarca Pond is small and has a seasonal water level, highly dependent on the canal’s water flow. Its banks are covered with marsh vegetation, which creates a striking contrast in the open cereal-growing landscape characteristic of Tierra de Campos and provides refuge for various fauna species associated with wetlands.
For the visitor, the Abarca Pond is a significant stop along the Canal de Castilla route, allowing them to understand the canal not only as a historical infrastructure, but as a living territorial system in which history, water and nature are intimately linked.
