Alar del Rey

Alar del Rey, on the banks of the Pisuerga River, is a place where water marks the beginning of a story. A landscape where the river’s course and the hand of humankind have walked together since its origin.

Founded in 1753 as a planned settlement, Alar del Rey was born in conjunction with the start of the Canal de Castilla, one of the great engineering works of Enlightenment Spain. Conceived as the starting point of an ambitious hydraulic project, the canal transformed the landscape and the daily lives of its inhabitants.

For decades, water served as both a route and an economic engine, forging connections between regions. The Alar dock became a hub of intense activity, where barges, mining railways from the northern basins, warehouses, auxiliary buildings, and even a prison for convicts coexisted—elements that still bear witness to that era of work, trade, and modernity.

The urban landscape is highlighted by the Church of Our Lady of Carmen, built in the 19th century, recognizable by its slender modernist bell tower, which rises as a visual reference point for the municipality.

Today, Alar del Rey maintains its own identity, deeply linked to its origin, its heritage and the constant dialogue between water, territory and memory.
