Alar del Rey Dock

The Alar del Rey Dock, built between 1759 and 1804, is the first major widening of the Northern Branch and the space where the canal is fully integrated into the urban fabric. Measuring 200 meters long and 30 meters wide, its limestone construction and excellent state of preservation allow us to understand how this inland port functioned, where barges maneuvered, loaded, and unloaded goods. It retains original mooring rings and the trace of the old railway line that ran alongside the warehouses, evidence of the overlapping infrastructure in a location that was always a communication hub. The surrounding area, now landscaped, maintains the direct relationship between water, stone, and traditional architecture, offering a clear interpretation of the canal’s historical and territorial value at its urban origin.

Numerous secondary elements surround the dock, complementing its function. The old pier and footbridge facilitated the connection between barges and land-based activity, easing transit and loading operations. The water retention system regulated the level necessary for maneuvering, ensuring a stable surface in a space shaped by the urban layout. The unique prison, with its three vaulted naves of masonry and ashlar, recalls the presence of forced laborers and the logistical complexity of the construction. The wooden stable is a unique example of auxiliary architecture related to draft animals. The numerous dwellings —built of rammed earth, wood, and curved tiles—demonstrate how daily life was organized around the canal, while the various warehouses, ranging from rectangular structures to sawtooth-shaped complexes, preserve the economic memory of the transport of flour and grain.

Visiting the dock is like stepping into a landscape where water shapes the city, and where every building retains its own unique character. It’s a historic experience deeply connected to the identity of the Canal de Castilla.
