The Almenara de Cabañas is a hydraulic element of the Northern Branch of the Canal de Castilla, located in the municipality of Osorno la Mayor (Palencia), at kilometer 40.740. Built between 1759 and 1804, it forms part of the ambitious Enlightenment project that transformed the territory through a network of infrastructure designed to regulate water and promote agricultural development. Its interest lies both in its function and in the simplicity and clarity of its design.
The structure is used for irrigation and retains its original regulating mechanisms, reinforcing its historical and functional value. It has a square floor plan, measuring approximately 3 meters long by 3 meters wide. It is topped by a hipped roof, whose perimeter cornice collects rainwater and drains it through a gargoyle. The walls combine limestone masonry with a pressed brick lining, while the roof itself is constructed of stone atop a brick dome—a sturdy and efficient solution.
The watchtower is not in a very good state of preservation, but it maintains the integrity of the original hydraulic work.
For the visitor, the Almenara de Cabañas offers a stop of interest on the Canal de Castilla route, where one can closely appreciate a key piece of water management, well integrated into a quiet rural environment that invites one to understand and enjoy the historic landscape of the canal.
