The Fuente Manías dam is a hydraulic element of the Northern Branch of the Castile Canal located in the municipality of Piña de Campos (Palencia), at kilometer 64.600. Built between 1759 and 1804, it is part of the great enlightened project that transformed the territory through a network of infrastructures intended to regulate water and promote agricultural use.
The structure, designed for irrigation, has a square floor plan, measuring approximately 3.05 meters in length and width, and nearly 3.40 meters in height. It is topped with a hipped roof, protected by a perimeter cornice that collects rainwater and channels it to the exterior through a gargoyle. The walls are constructed of limestone masonry, while the roof itself is built with stone laid over a brick vault, a common feature in this type of hydraulic construction. Currently, the stone cladding of the roof is missing, compromising its formal integrity.
For the visitor, the Fuente Manías dam offers the opportunity to discover a modest but essential part of the Canal de Castilla, integrated into a quiet rural environment that allows one to understand the historical mechanisms of water management up close and enjoy a leisurely tour of the canal landscape.
