Amusco

The area around Amusco was already occupied in Vaccaean and Roman times, but it was in the Middle Ages that the town reached its greatest relevance in the historical organization of Tierra de Campos.

During this period, Amusco became the economic and defensive center of a coalition of nine villages, with intense activity linked to the wool industry and the mills on the Ucieza River. This function explains the existence of a wall and a complex network of defensive underground passages.

Amusco was also one of the main Jewish centers in the province of Palencia, as demonstrated by the 14th-century synagogue, a testament to the cultural diversity of the medieval town.

The main historical landmark is the Romanesque church of San Pedro, which preserves two portals from the 12th and 13th centuries. Its imposing silhouette is visible from afar, earning it the popular name of Pajarón de Campos (Big Bird of Campos). The hermitage of Nuestra Señora de las Fuentes, an example of transitional Romanesque architecture, completes the town’s heritage.

In modern times, the proximity of the Canal de Castilla reinforced the role of Amusco within the communication axes and the cereal economy of Tierra de Campos.
