Belmonte de Campos

Belmonte de Campos is part of Tierra de Campos, in a wide open landscape that has historically conditioned the settlement and organization of the territory.

Belmonte de Campos Castle, built between the 15th and 16th centuries, was linked to the Sarmiento family. It retains an imposing keep and the remains of an irregular fortified enclosure. Declared a Site of Cultural Interest, it is one of the most outstanding defensive landmarks in the region.

The Canal de Castilla is also an essential part of the historical landscape of Belmonte.

In its immediate surroundings is located the “lock number 5 of the Campos branch,” a complex that preserves a lock, bridge and lock keeper’s house, a representative example of enlightened hydraulic engineering and the system that allowed the regulation of navigation and cereal transport in Tierra de Campos.

These elements allow us to understand the role of the Canal as a key infrastructure in the economic and territorial articulation of the region.
