The Boadilla Pond is a small wetland associated with the Canal de Castilla, located near lock number 16 of the North Branch, within the municipality of Boadilla del Camino. Its origin is directly related to the construction and continuous use of the canal, developed between the 18th and 19th centuries as one of the great hydraulic engineering works of the Spanish Enlightenment.
The pool is not a monumental construction, but rather a floodable depression created by the dynamics of the canal’s water, seepage, and runoff from the surrounding area. This natural accumulation of water resulted in a stable wetland, integrated into the hydraulic landscape alongside the limestone masonry of the lock and the towpaths. Regarding its conservation, the Boadilla Pool is well-maintained and has been the subject of signage and environmental enhancement measures within the LIFE Canal de Castilla program, recognizing its ecological and scenic value. It forms part of the canal’s heritage, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest.
For the visitor, this enclave offers a peaceful and complementary experience to the visit of the lock, allowing one to understand the Canal de Castilla not only as a transport and irrigation infrastructure, but as a territorial system that generated new landscapes and ecosystems now integrated into cultural and natural routes.
