Cabezón de Pisuerga

Cabezón de Pisuerga, on the banks of the Pisuerga River and at the foot of Altamira Hill, has occupied a position of great strategic value since antiquity. The river has historically shaped its landscape, its settlement, and its function as a transit point and control point for the territory.

Roman presence is documented in the surrounding area, as evidenced by the village of Santa Cruz. In medieval times, Cabezón boasted a castle, now vanished, which reinforced control of the river crossing. This defensive and transit function is symbolically maintained by the Cabezón bridge, a landmark of the town, which continues to facilitate, as it has for centuries, the historic crossing of the Pisuerga River.

The main historical landmark is the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, built in the 16th century and later renovated. Inside, it features excellent altarpieces and sculptures, a Gothic tomb, and a majestic 18th-century Baroque organ.

The cultural landscape of Cabezón is completed by traditional wineries, cave houses, river cliffs and the proximity of the Canal de Castilla, which reinforces the reading of the territory as a space for transit, production and use of water.
