The Canal de Castilla Museum, located in the Palencia town of Villaumbrales, is one of the main centers dedicated to understanding this great engineering feat of Enlightenment-era Spain. Situated next to the Campos branch, its location allows visitors to experience the canal in its original context, directly connecting historical knowledge with the landscape in which it was built.

The museum is located in the so-called King’s House, a building constructed in 1799 as part of the canal’s auxiliary infrastructure. This functional building, linked to navigation, preserves traditional materials such as brick, ashlar masonry, and rammed earth, typical of the architecture of the period.

Its importance lies in its function as an interpretation center, providing an accessible understanding of the origin, development, and transformation of the Canal de Castilla. In this sense, it offers a comprehensive view of this infrastructure, explaining its role as a communication route and as a key element in the Castilian economy during the 18th and 19th centuries. Furthermore, the museum is located next to the remains of an old shipyard, where the barges that navigated the canal were built and repaired, adding value by connecting the exhibition narrative with the original historical site.

A visit to the museum thus offers a complete experience, where knowledge is complemented by direct contact with the surroundings. Strolling along the canal, observing the nearby structures, or simply enjoying the scenery makes this space an ideal gateway to discovering the Canal de Castilla and its legacy.
