The Carreabar Weir, built between 1759 and 1804, is part of the network of works on the Northern Branch of the Castile Canal designed to regulate and distribute water for agricultural irrigation. Located in the municipality of Amusco (Palencia), at kilometer 72.467, this small structure played an essential role in controlling the flow, contributing to the balanced operation of the canal and the orderly use of water in its surroundings.
The structure has a square floor plan and modest dimensions, measuring approximately 2.80 meters in length and width and nearly 2.97 meters in height. It is built of limestone ashlar, a durable material commonly used in canal infrastructure. It is topped with a hipped roof made of limestone slabs supported by a pressed brick vault, protected by a perimeter cornice that collects rainwater and drains it through a gargoyle. The roof’s original finish is almost entirely intact, allowing for a clear appreciation of its original design and meticulous construction.
