The Carrular Aqueduct, built between 1753 and 1757, forms part of the Campos Branch of the Castile Canal, in the section between the Sahagún el Viejo Bridge and the Fuentes de Nava Bridge. Located within the municipality of Paredes de Nava (Palencia), at kilometer 104.655, it addresses the need to maintain the canal’s continuity over small watercourses, integrating effective solutions in an open, agricultural landscape.
This is a small aqueduct, constructed with a single segmental arch, a design that allows for a reduced height while maintaining structural stability. It is built entirely of limestone ashlar, a material commonly used on the Canal de Castilla for its strength and durability. The parapets are now missing, revealing the original stonework and highlighting the structure’s functional and austere character. Its location and difficult access reinforce the perception of a discreet structure, designed solely to channel water beneath the canal.
For the visitor, the Carrular Aqueduct offers a leisurely and almost intimate experience of the Canal de Castilla, ideal for understanding how these small, essential, though little visible, works sustained the continuous operation of the canal and are naturally integrated into the landscape of Tierra de Campos.
