Castrillo de Riopisuerga, located on the border between the provinces of Burgos and Palencia, is situated in the Pisuerga river valley, in an environment where the river landscape has historically shaped the life of the municipality.

The history of the place is documented as early as 968, when it appears in a donation to the monastery of Santa María de Rezmondo. Since then, the settlement has maintained continuous habitation and, in the 14th century, it formed part of the Merindad of Monzón, a demarcation of great interest in the territorial organization of medieval Castile.

From that past remains the church of San Bartolomé, begun around the year 1200, whose Romanesque apse is one of the most outstanding elements of the complex.

Castrillo de Riopisuerga, not far from the tenth lock of the Canal de Castilla, is today a village where its rural essence and the river landscape define its form and way of life.
