Castromocho

Castromocho is located in the heart of Tierra de Campos, on the banks of the Valdeginate River, in a territory where settlement dates back to the Iron Age and the Roman era.

The village was repopulated and fortified at the beginning of the 12th century.

Throughout its history, Castromocho achieved remarkable importance, boasting three churches, a Franciscan convent, hospitals, and several hermitages.

The monumental heritage is centered around the church of “Santa María de Colaña”, from the 15th century, and the church of “San Esteban”, begun in the 16th century, which preserves an outstanding historical organ.

In addition, the town center showcases examples of traditional architecture that reflect rural life in the Tierra de Campos region.

The landscape of Castromocho is completed by the presence of the Canal de Castilla.

The Membrillar bridge, completed in 1849, stands next to the ruins of an old factory. Nearby are the remains of the now-vanished narrow-gauge railway bridge of the “Palencia–Villalón” line, an infrastructure that once competed with the canal itself as a means of transporting grain.
