On the banks of the Canal de Castilla, Capillas rises up on a plain typical of Tierra de Campos.

The first documented mention of the town appears in the year 916, under the name Fonte de Capela, making it one of the first repopulated settlements in the region. During the Middle Ages, it was a fiefdom of the bishops of León, who promoted its urban organization and endowed it with a wall, of which an old gate still remains.

Capillas once boasted five churches, reflecting its historical importance, although today only the Church of San Agustín remains. This church houses a remarkable artistic heritage, most notably an 18th-century Iberian organ.

The cultural landscape is further enriched by the remains of an important hospital, dovecotes, the elegant Bishop’s Fountain, and vernacular buildings constructed of adobe and rammed earth. Along the Canal de Castilla, the remains of a flour mill, a warehouse, a dock, and a lock are also preserved.
