The Puente de las Candelas, also known as the Candelas Bridge, is part of the Southern Branch of the Canal de Castilla and is located in the municipality of Dueñas (Palencia), at kilometer 111.897. Built between 1831 and 1836, its interest lies both in its correct structural solution and in its particular relationship with the environment, since it is almost hidden between two other nearby bridges, the Valoria Bridge and the New Bridge, which limits the view of one of its elevations.
The structure is a semicircular arch, a robust and efficient design, with a span of approximately 7 meters and a height of around 6.15 meters. The entire structure reaches a length of approximately 16.60 meters, with a width varying between 5.60 and 8.50 meters and a total height of approximately 8.40 meters. It is built entirely of limestone ashlar and is complemented by stone parapets and a side walkway that ensured the continuity of the towpath, an essential element for the canal’s operation. Its state of preservation is fair, and it retains all of the original hydraulic works, which are protected in their entirety due to their heritage value.
For visitors, the Puente de las Candelas (Candle Bridge) offers a compelling stop to discover a less visible element of the Canal de Castilla. Its integration of historical and modern infrastructure invites reflection on the evolution of the region and allows one to enjoy a stretch where engineering, landscape, and history coexist in a unique way.
