The Dueñas Dam is a historic structure of the Castile Canal located in the municipality of Dueñas (Palencia), at kilometer 111.265. Built between 1831 and 1836, it addresses the need to secure the canal’s course at a critical point, where the terrain demanded a robust solution to retain earth and ensure the stability of the channel. Its significance lies in demonstrating how 19th-century engineering solved complex problems with durable solutions that were perfectly integrated into the surrounding environment.
The structure consists of a double retaining wall on the left bank of the canal. Approximately 400 meters long, nearly 2 meters wide, and about 6 meters high, the wall follows the course of the water and protects the infrastructure from landslides and erosion. It is built of stone masonry, a durable material well-suited to the structure’s function, which prioritizes the canal’s solidity and continuity over any ornamental effect. Its linear design reinforces the canal’s role as a defining feature of the area.
