This house, built between 1831 and 1836, is part of the group of auxiliary buildings of the Campos Branch of the Castile Canal and is located in the municipality of Paredes de Nava (Palencia), at kilometer 110.250. Its original function was to serve as a residence associated with the activity of the canal, integrating housing, patio and stables in the same functional unit, reflecting a way of life closely linked to the management and maintenance of the hydraulic infrastructure.
The building has a rectangular floor plan and consists of a single story plus an attic space, with approximate dimensions of 26.50 meters long, 8.35 meters wide, and 3.90 meters high. The house has a gabled roof, while the stable area has a single-pitched roof. The main walls are made of pressed brick, with projecting brickwork at the corners, lintels, and cornice, resting on a limestone plinth. The interior structure comprises load-bearing walls and wooden beams, and the original roof was covered with curved ceramic tiles. Adobe with brick buttresses was used in the courtyard, and stone masonry reinforced with brick was used in the stables. Currently, the roof has disappeared, which exacerbates the building’s deterioration. The house is in a state of ruin, although it retains original structural elements, facades, and a roof, which are protected due to their heritage value.
For the visitor, this house offers a complementary reading of the Canal de Castilla, allowing one to understand not only the water engineering, but also the human and everyday dimension of the canal, integrated into the open and silent landscape of Tierra de Campos.
