The El Paramillo pond is located in the municipality of Husillos, in the province of Palencia, alongside the Canal de Castilla, near the Casablanca aqueduct and the Valdemudo bridge. Its origin is directly related to the construction and operation of the canal between the 18th and 19th centuries, one of the great hydraulic engineering works of Enlightenment Spain.
This wetland was formed primarily by the infiltration of canal water and the disruption of the natural drainage of the land. It features an intermittent water level, highly dependent on the hydraulic regime and climatic conditions, which explains the significant seasonal variations that can even leave the pond dry at certain times.
From a natural perspective, the pond is primarily covered by large marsh vegetation, accompanied by small stands of black poplar that contribute structural diversity to the wetland. This enclave provides a striking contrast within the cereal-growing landscape of Tierra de Campos, creating a refuge for various species of fauna and flora associated with wetlands.
For the visitor, this space offers a discreet but significant stop on the Canal de Castilla route, ideal for understanding how engineering, nature and landscape intertwine in one of the most unique heritage sites in Castilla y León.
