The Gatillas Aqueduct, built between 1759 and 1804, is part of the infrastructure of the Southern Branch of the Castile Canal, designed to ensure the continuity of the canal’s route over natural watercourses. Located within the municipality of Palencia, at kilometer 97.9, its function is to allow passage under the Gatillas stream, now known as the Aqueduct stream, guaranteeing flow control and the stability of the hydraulic structure.
The structure consists of a single semicircular arch, with a span of approximately 4.80 meters and a height of nearly 3.15 meters. The overall dimensions are approximately 7.20 meters long, 6.40 meters wide, and 5.40 meters high. It is built entirely of limestone ashlar and is complemented by stone parapets and finials that channel the water and reinforce the structure’s stability. Its design reflects the principles of functionality and durability characteristic of Enlightenment engineering applied to water management.
