Grijota

Grijota, very close to Palencia, is located in the Tierra de Campos region, in a strategic position that has favored settlement since the Bronze Age. The current population originated from the repopulation efforts of the 9th century, linked to the diocese of Palencia.

One of the defining features of Grijota is its direct connection to the Canal de Castilla. Here, the canal branches off from the Campos branch, making the town a unique enclave within this great hydraulic engineering project of Enlightenment Spain. Notable features include the Serrón complex, with its triple lock, and a double lock located within the town itself.

The monumental heritage is centered around the Church of the Holy Cross, from the end of the 16th century, a large building that preserves a spectacular Baroque organ, and the Hermitage of Our Lady Queen of the Angels, a notable example of transitional Romanesque architecture from the end of the 13th century.

Today, Grijota is a dynamic urban center integrated into the metropolitan area of Palencia, which has managed to keep its traditions alive.
