Herrera de Pisuerga Bridge

The Herrera de Pisuerga Bridge, built between 1759 and 1804, is part of the network of infrastructure that allowed for the continuity of roads over the Castile Canal without interfering with navigation. Its low arch, characterized by its smooth and efficient profile, rests on a solid sandstone masonry structure that has withstood more than two centuries of use. Measuring 25.95 meters long, 6.05 meters wide, and almost 6 meters high, the bridge stands out for its balanced proportions and the presence of stone walkways at the base of the arch, which provided continuity to the towpaths used by the mules pulling the barges. Although the parapets have been replaced with concrete, the rest of the structure retains its original authenticity and is in a good state of preservation, reinforcing its heritage value as an integral part of the canal’s hydraulic system.

Located beside the road from Herrera de Pisuerga to Burgos, the bridge blends seamlessly into an environment where water, stone, and the agricultural landscape create a scene of profound serenity. Beneath its arch, on the right bank, a paved area remains, bearing witness to the historical traffic associated with the canal. A visit allows you to appreciate the quality of 18th-century construction and enjoy a privileged vantage point from which to observe the canal’s route and its relationship to the surrounding area.
