The heritage complex of the Canal de Castilla in Villaumbrales, built primarily between 1753 and 1759, represents one of the most complete sections of the Campos Branch, integrating hydraulic, road, and building infrastructures linked to the canal’s daily operation. Located at kilometer 90.3, this area concentrates essential elements for water management, traffic control, and logistical support for the operation of the infrastructure, reflecting the territorial scope of the Enlightenment project.

The Casa del Rey (King’s House) stands out, built in 1799 as a residence and warehouse linked to the canal. It is a rectangular building with two stories and an attic, constructed of brick, rammed earth with courses of brick, and limestone ashlar at the corners and surrounds, with a wooden frame and a ceramic tile roof. It currently houses the Canal de Castilla Museum.

Next to it is a system of dry docks, built between 1753 and 1759 in limestone ashlar, intended for the maintenance of boats: one of them, next to the King’s House, retains much of the original work, while another is in a state of ruin.

Nearby stands a bridge over the canal, built of limestone masonry and featuring a semicircular arch. Its purpose is to allow the crossing of the local road 613, integrating vehicular traffic into the canal’s layout. The bridge is 35.40 meters long, with a variable width between 6 and 12.80 meters and a maximum height of 5.75 meters. It has splayed stone parapets at the ends, a roadway with stone sidewalks, and a semicircular arch at each wing, as well as walkways that ensure the continuity of the towpaths.

The Villaumbrales complex offers visitors a comprehensive view of the Canal de Castilla as a complex and interconnected work, where infrastructure, buildings and landscape form an inseparable unit.

How to get there:

The C-613 road from Palencia to Sahagún, at kilometer marker 8 next to the cemetery, crosses the canal at an oblique angle. The old Villaumbrales bridge is located 35 meters downstream from this crossing.
