The Charca de La Raya is part of the system of wetlands associated with the Canal de Castilla in the province of Palencia, within the protected area ZEPA Lagunas del Canal de Castilla, included in the Natura 2000 Network. Its origin is directly related to the construction and operation of the canal between the 18th and 19th centuries, when the excavation of the channel and its character as a hydraulic barrier permanently transformed the natural behavior of the waters.
This is a small, seasonal pond whose water level varies considerably throughout the year, depending on the canal level and weather conditions. This fluctuating water regime has fostered the development of marsh vegetation adapted to cycles of flooding and drought, creating a highly interesting ecosystem within a traditionally dry and homogeneous agricultural landscape.
The Charca de La Raya is a representative example of the indirectly anthropogenic wetlands created by the Canal de Castilla. Its heritage value lies both in its ecological importance and in its ability to illustrate how a major work of enlightened hydraulic engineering ended up creating new natural landscapes, now recognized and protected.
For the visitor, this enclave forms part of the overall understanding of the Canal de Castilla as a territorial system, where history, agriculture and nature are closely linked, giving rise to a network of small wetlands that enrich the natural and cultural heritage of Tierra de Campos.
