The Ucieza Lagoon is located within the municipality of Piña de Campos, in the province of Palencia, very close to the Ucieza River and the route of the Castile Canal. Its origin is closely linked to the construction of this large hydraulic work between the 18th and 19th centuries, which altered the natural drainage of the area and led to the formation of permanent and seasonal wetlands.
From a natural perspective, it is a shallow lagoon with fluctuating water levels throughout the year, surrounded by marsh vegetation that contrasts with the cereal-growing landscape of Tierra de Campos. This wetland environment creates a valuable ecological refuge in a region characterized by agricultural uniformity and a scarcity of natural water bodies. Laguna del Ucieza is part of the protected area SAC and SPA Lagunas del Canal de Castilla, integrated into the Natura 2000 network, and has been the subject of restoration and environmental management activities within the framework of the LIFE project.
For the visitor, the lagoon offers a place of observation and rest within the tour of the Canal de Castilla, allowing them to understand how an infrastructure conceived for transport and irrigation ended up generating new landscapes and ecosystems that today form an essential part of the natural and cultural heritage of the territory.
