The heritage complex of Lock 30, built between 1759 and 1804, is located in the municipality of Grijota (Palencia), at kilometer 92.129 of the Southern Branch of the Castile Canal. This site is part of the earliest infrastructure of this branch and its main function was to regulate the canal’s water level, control the flow, and allow the use of the waterfall, integrating navigation, maintenance, and productive uses at a single point.
Associated with the lock are several complementary elements that complete the functional reading of the whole: the main bridge over the lock, with a semicircular arch and limestone ashlar, with wings that form a spur at the outlet of the weir and partially reformed parapets; a second bridge at the diversion, also made of stone, which gives continuity to the old road and the paths on the right bank; and the lock keeper’s house, rectangular in plan, with a stone plinth, brick and rammed earth walls and tile roof, now unused and in a state of ruin, but protected by the value of its facades and original structural elements.
Access to the lock is immediate, at kilometer 15 of the section shared by the N-610 route from Magaz to Becilla de Valderabuey and the C-612 route from Palencia to Zamora via Medina de Rioseco. This point is about 4 kilometers from the city of Palencia.
