The Charca de los Corrales is located within the municipality of Piña de Campos, in the province of Palencia, on the right bank of the Canal de Castilla, in the section between the Piña bridge and the Bezana bridge. Its origin is directly related to the construction and operation of the canal, developed between the 18th and 19th centuries as part of the ambitious Enlightenment project for navigation and irrigation in Castile.
This is a shallow pond, with a water level that varies throughout the year, surrounded by marsh vegetation that contrasts with the cereal-growing landscape of Tierra de Campos. This wetland formed as a result of the canal’s barrier effect and the alteration of the land’s natural drainage, gradually becoming integrated into the agricultural environment.
The Charca de los Corrales is part of the group of protected wetlands of the ZEPA Lagunas del Canal de Castilla, included in the Natura 2000 Network. Its heritage value lies both in its ecological interest and in its role as testimony to the territorial effects derived from one of the great hydraulic engineering works of enlightened Spain.
For the visitor, this enclave offers a complementary view of the Canal de Castilla, allowing it to be understood not only as a historical infrastructure, but also as a generator of landscapes and ecosystems that are now fully integrated into the natural and cultural heritage of the territory.
