Medina de Rioseco

Medina de Rioseco is one of the most significant historical cities in Tierra de Campos. Known as the City of the Admirals, it was for centuries a major center of political, religious, and economic power, linked to the Enríquez lineage, admirals of Castile, and its strong commercial vocation.

From the Middle Ages, Rioseco stood out as a fair town, favored by its strategic position on the communication routes of the Meseta Central. Its heyday came between the 15th and 16th centuries, when, thanks to its intense commercial activity, it consolidated itself as one of the main urban centers of Castile.

This splendor is reflected in an exceptional monumental heritage, visible in the churches of Santa María de Mediavilla, Santiago Apóstol, Santa Cruz and San Francisco, along with convents, hospitals, civil architecture and urban planning that testify to the historical and commercial importance of the city.

The Canal de Castilla marked a new era in the history of Medina de Rioseco. Here, the Campos branch line culminates, creating a large canal basin complete with a dry dock, stables, warehouses, houses, mills, and flour factories, transforming the town into one of the canal’s main industrial and logistical hubs. This complex facilitated the transport of grain and reinforced Rioseco’s role as the economic center of Tierra de Campos during the 18th and 19th centuries.
