Melgar de Fernamental

Melgar de Fernamental is located on the banks of the Pisuerga River, in a location that has historically favored its role as a territorial reference center.

The history of Melgar dates back to the Middle Ages, when it appears in records as a behetría, meaning it had the right to choose its own lord. The historic center preserves excellent civil architecture, representative of its urban development and its role as the administrative and social hub of the surrounding area.

The monumental Church of Santa María de la Asunción, built between the 14th and 16th centuries, showcases the coexistence of Gothic and Renaissance elements. A remarkable Gothic portal, linked to the school of Gil de Siloé, stands out on the south side, while the interior houses a rich artistic heritage that reinforces the monumental value of the complex.

The Canal de Castilla adds a complementary reading of the territory, with such unique sites as the Abánades aqueduct, a spectacular example of the ingenuity required for the construction of this great work.

The hermitage of Our Lady of Zorita, built on the site of the old medieval village, preserves a prominent Romanesque apse and elements of pre-Romanesque origin.
