Osorno

Osorno la Mayor has occupied a strategic position between the Meseta Central and the northern Iberian Peninsula for centuries. Its status as a crossroads and communication hub explains much of its history and its role within the territory over time.

But Osorno’s history stretches back much further. More than four thousand years ago, prehistoric communities left their mark on the Velilla dolmen, one of the oldest evidences of settlement in the area. Nearby, the Dessobriga archaeological site recalls the pre-Roman and Roman presence, when this enclave was established as an important urban center.

During the Middle Ages, Osorno established itself as a prominent population center. This long historical trajectory is reflected today in its monumental heritage, represented by the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, the Iron Palace, and the Hermitage of Our Lady of Piety.

This vocation for crossing and communication was maintained in later times, reinforced by historical infrastructures such as the Canal de Castilla, whose northern branch crosses the municipal area, integrating hydraulic engineering and history in an environment that continues to speak of transit and encounter.
