The Palencia-Villalón railway bridge was part of the narrow-gauge railway infrastructure that, for a time, shared and competed with the Canal de Castilla as a main artery for freight and passenger transport. Located on the Southern Branch, within the municipality of Palencia, at kilometer 93.050 and in the section between Lock 30 and Locks 31-32, this crossing allowed passage over the canal, integrating the new railway network into a territory already structured by the hydraulic engineering works.
The bridge is currently dismantled, and only the remains of its abutments survive. These abutments, constructed of masonry with ashlar edges, are a robust solution designed to support the loads of the railway deck. Although the main structure is gone, these remains clearly reveal the original layout and allow us to understand the spatial relationship between the railway and the canal. Their austere and functional character reflects the engineering of the time and the interplay between two transport systems destined to transform the landscape. Their state of preservation is typical of standing archaeological remains, structurally protected due to their heritage value as evidence of a vanished infrastructure.

Integrated into the open landscape of Tierra de Campos, it allows one to imagine the crossing of barges and trains and understand how the Canal de Castilla coexisted with new forms of transport at a pivotal moment in history.
