The Charca del Rosillo is located alongside the Canal de Castilla, in the municipality of Requena de Campos (Palencia), and forms part of the network of wetlands indirectly created by the canal’s construction and operation between the 18th and 19th centuries. Its significance lies in being a clear example of how a major historical hydraulic infrastructure project not only transformed the economy and the landscape, but also gave rise to new and highly significant natural landscapes.

The pond fulfills an essential environmental function as a seasonal wetland associated with the canal’s water level, acting as a natural retention area and refuge for marsh fauna and flora. It is a small space, without monumental architectural structures, defined by earthen slopes and gently sloping banks. Its materials are entirely natural, with clay soils, shallow water, and abundant aquatic and riparian vegetation, favored by the water stability provided by the canal. Its state of conservation is good, and it enjoys official protection as it is included in the Regional Catalogue of Wetlands and in the Special Protection Area (SPA) and Special Area of Conservation (SAC) of the Canal de Castilla Lagoons, which underscores its heritage and ecological value.
For visitors, the Charca del Rosillo offers a tranquil experience that complements the canal tour. It is an ideal spot for birdwatching, understanding the relationship between historical engineering and the natural environment, and enjoying a unique landscape perfectly integrated into the Tierra de Campos plain.
