San Llorente de la Vega

The Burgos village of San Llorente de la Vega, on the border with the province of Palencia, is located between two major waterways: the Pisuerga River to the east and the Castile Canal to the west, which frame its landscape and history.

Its origins are linked to the medieval repopulation, a time when this territory was organized around merindades, lordships, and behetrías. During the Middle Ages, San Llorente was part of the merindad of Monzón, a significant demarcation in the territorial organization of Castile, and held the status of a behetría, which allowed its inhabitants to elect their own lord.

The church of San Lorenzo is a 16th century work built on top of an earlier Romanesque temple, of which the portal is especially preserved, with capitals decorated with plant motifs, animals and human figures.

Surrounded by fertile fields, next to the Pisuerga River and the fourteenth lock of the Canal de Castilla, San Llorente de la Vega preserves the imprint of its medieval past in a landscape where water and history remain closely linked.
