San Quirce de Riopisuerga

San Quirce del Río Pisuerga is a small village within the municipality of Alar del Rey. It is located on the eastern bank of the river, in a transitional area where the plateau begins to meet the Cantabrian Mountains and the landscape subtly changes.

First documented in the 12th century, the place takes its name from Saint Quiricus. During the Middle Ages, San Quirce was dependent on the monastery of Santa María la Real de Aguilar de Campoo, which shaped its organization and its relationship with the surrounding territory.

The main heritage landmark is the church of San Miguel, built in the 16th century on the remains of an old rural Romanesque temple.

At the top of Santo Hill stands the Hermitage of Christ. Built in the 13th century on an old defensive site and later renovated, it visually dominates the entire Pisuerga valley, reinforcing the historical link between landscape, spirituality and territory.
