The Santa María Aqueduct, built between 1753 and 1757, is part of the Canal de Castilla works in the section between Becerril de Campos and the Puente de Sahagún el Viejo. Located within the municipality of Becerril de Campos (Palencia), at kilometer 94.807, it addresses the need to ensure the canal’s continuity over natural watercourses, integrating hydraulic control in a predominantly agricultural area.
The structure is achieved through a single semicircular arch, with a span of approximately 3 meters and a height of nearly 3.40 meters. The arch features a unique design: its cross-section widens at the outlet, obliquely crossing the channel. This design improves stress distribution and enhances the overall stability of the structure. The aqueduct is approximately 17.15 meters long, nearly 31 meters wide, and has a total height of 5.30 meters. It is constructed entirely of limestone masonry and is complemented by stone parapets that protect the structure and visually organize its appearance.
Integrated into the open landscape of Tierra de Campos, the Santa María Aqueduct offers visitors a serene stop to understand how these discreet but essential works allowed the continuous operation of the Canal de Castilla, inviting them to enjoy the harmony between technology, water and landscape.
