The Santo Cilde Aqueduct, built between 1753 and 1757, is part of the Campos Branch of the Castile Canal and addresses the need to maintain the canal’s continuity over natural watercourses. Located in the municipality of Becerril de Campos (Palencia), at kilometer 97.707, its function is to allow the Fuente Hucha stream to pass under the canal, ensuring flow control and the stability of the hydraulic infrastructure.
The structure consists of a single semicircular arch, a common construction solution in canal works due to its efficiency and durability. The aqueduct measures approximately 4.55 meters long, 5.60 meters wide, and 4.35 meters high. It is built entirely of limestone masonry and is complemented by stone parapets and wing walls that channel the stream and protect the structure. Currently, the arch is submerged, a circumstance that affects its appearance but does not prevent a clear recognition of its original configuration.
Integrated into a quiet stretch of the canal, surrounded by the open landscape of Tierra de Campos, the Santo Cilde Aqueduct offers visitors a serene stop to understand how these discreet, yet essential, works made possible the continuous operation of the Canal de Castilla and its harmonious adaptation to the territory.
