The Tencario Pond is located within the municipality of Ribas de Campos, in the province of Palencia, on the right bank of the Canal de Castilla and very close to the point where the Campos Branch begins, near Calahorra de Ribas. Its origin is directly linked to the initial works of the canal, begun in 1753, when this complex hydraulic system was established.
Unlike other lagoons that arose more indirectly, the Tencario Pond is defined as an artificial pond, created in the context of water regulation and the modification of natural drainage during the construction of the canal. Its water level is shallow and variable, depending on the canal’s flow and seasonal conditions. Over time, this area has become naturalized, developing marsh vegetation and becoming a functional wetland within the cereal-growing landscape of Tierra de Campos. The presence of water creates a strong visual and ecological contrast in a traditionally dry environment, promoting biodiversity.
For the visitor, this enclave allows one to understand the canal not only as a linear infrastructure, but as a set of interconnected hydraulic spaces that, since their origin, have shaped the landscape and generated new ecosystems that are now protected.
