The Charca de Rueda is part of the network of wetlands associated with the Canal de Castilla near Frómista, in the province of Palencia. Its origin is directly linked to the construction and continuous use of the canal, developed between the 18th and 19th centuries as one of the great hydraulic engineering projects of Enlightenment Spain.
This is a shallow pond, with a water level that varies throughout the year, surrounded by marsh vegetation that creates a striking contrast in the cereal-growing landscape of Tierra de Campos. This wetland formed as a result of the canal’s barrier effect and the alteration of the land’s natural drainage, becoming integrated into the agricultural environment over time.
The Charca de Rueda is located within the protected area of the Lagunas del Canal de Castilla Special Protection Area (SPA), part of the Natura 2000 network, and has been included in the restoration and environmental management activities carried out within the framework of the LIFE project. Its heritage value lies both in its ecological importance and in its ability to illustrate how an infrastructure designed for navigation and irrigation ended up generating new ecosystems of high natural value.
For the visitor, this enclave offers a peaceful and complementary experience to the journey of the Canal de Castilla, allowing them to discover a discreet but significant landscape, where history, engineering and nature are closely linked.
