The Arenales Weir, built between 1753 and 1757, is part of the network of works on the Campos Branch of the Castile Canal, designed to regulate agricultural irrigation and distribute water in a controlled manner. Located in the municipality of Becerril de Campos (Palencia), at kilometer 98.140, this small structure played a vital role in the daily operation of the canal, ensuring the efficient use of water in a region deeply connected to agriculture.
The structure has a square floor plan and approximate dimensions of 3.50 meters on each side and 1.90 meters in height, reflecting a simple and strictly functional design. The walls are constructed of pressed brick, with reinforced piers at the corners, while the roof is a brick dome, finished externally with a hipped roof. A limestone cornice runs along the upper perimeter, providing stability and aiding in rainwater runoff. These structural elements, common in canal watchtowers, demonstrate the combination of durable materials and efficient solutions characteristic of Enlightenment engineering.
