Dueñas

Dueñas occupies a privileged location, overlooking the confluence of the Carrión and Pisuerga rivers and the main historical routes that shaped the region, such as the Royal Road of Burgos, the Eastern Leonese Royal Cattle Trail, the Castile Canal, and later, the railway. This strategic position allowed this walled town to consolidate itself as a prosperous urban center from the Middle Ages onwards.

From the 15th century onwards, the presence of the Acuña family and the town’s economic boom left a profound mark on its urban landscape, which is still evident today in its remarkable heritage. The religious heritage is equally outstanding, with the Church of Santa María de la Asunción, the Convent of San Agustín, the Hospital of Santiago, several historic hermitages, and the nearby Cistercian Abbey of San Isidro.

On the hillsides are preserved some 178 excavated wine cellars, documented since 1211, alongside cave houses linked to the winemaking tradition, which reached its peak in the 19th century. Among them, the Remigio de Salas winery stands out. Today, the winemaking tradition of Dueñas continues through the Cigales Designation of Origin.

The Canal de Castilla, built in the 18th century, completes this unique historical and cultural landscape.
