Very close to the urban center of Palencia and next to the Puente Mayor that crosses the Carrión River, is the Dársena del Canal de Castilla, one of the most significant hydraulic complexes of the southern branch of the canal.
Palencia, a city of ancient origin linked to the Carrión River, has developed its history amidst its monumental heritage, the agricultural activity of its surroundings, and the communication infrastructure that connected it with other territories of Castile. In this context, the Castile Canal played a key role in its economic growth and urban development.
Built between 1759 and 1804, the dock measures 135 meters long and 40 meters wide. It is constructed entirely of limestone masonry and retains all of its original hydraulic works in good condition, as well as the historic warehouses.
The dock functioned as a true inland port, where barges anchored to facilitate the berthing, loading, and unloading of river transport. It also fulfills an important regulatory function, as it can discharge water into the Carrión River through an underground conduit controlled by a sluice gate, and also draw water from the river through a pumping system located about thirty-five meters from the dock.
This complex allows us to understand how the Canal de Castilla was integrated into the city of Palencia as a hydraulic, industrial and territorial infrastructure, forming part of its historical development and urban identity, and combining engineering, architecture and landscape in one of the most representative spaces of the canal in its final stretch.
