The Palencia Dock, built between 1759 and 1804, is one of the most unique spaces on the Southern Branch of the Castile Canal and a landmark in the relationship between the hydraulic infrastructure and the city. Located at kilometer 96.2, near the Puente Mayor (Main Bridge) over the Carrión River, it functioned as an inland port, maneuvering point, and loading and unloading area, in addition to playing a key role in regulating the canal’s flow as it reached the urban area.
The basin is configured as a wide, artificial widening of the canal, approximately 135 meters long and 40 meters wide, constructed of limestone masonry. Its walls and bottom allow for the berthing of vessels and turning maneuvers, while its design incorporates hydraulic control elements: it can discharge water into the Carrión River through an underground conduit regulated by a gate located on the left side, and also draw water from the river via a pumping system located a short distance away, ensuring the system’s equilibrium. These construction solutions reflect the canal’s adaptation to a dynamic urban environment.
The complex is completed by several warehouses aligned along the dock, rectangular buildings with hipped roofs, constructed with limestone masonry foundations, brick walls, and wooden structures with metal trusses and tie rods. Their original function was the storage of goods related to river traffic, and they continue to serve this purpose today, remaining in good condition and protected for their structural value. A pumping station associated with water management is also present, reinforcing the technical nature of the site.
