The Requena Bridge is one of the most outstanding works of the Northern Branch of the Castile Canal in the municipality of Requena de Campos (Palencia), located at kilometer 48.170. Built between 1759 and 1804, it is part of the ambitious enlightened project that sought to reconcile the great hydraulic infrastructure of the canal with the existing communication routes, guaranteeing the continuity of the roads and local traffic.
The bridge allows the passage of the P-433 local road, which connects Frómista with Lantadilla, over the canal. The structure is an elliptical arch, a construction solution that provides stability and a stylized appearance. The arch is approximately 14.65 meters long and 4.90 meters high. The entire structure measures 33.10 meters in length, with a variable width between 8.20 and 4.20 meters and a maximum height of 7 meters. The design includes a plain impost at the base of the parapets, which flare out at the ends over the abutments. Beneath the arch are two lateral stone walkways that provide continuity to the towpaths, reducing the width of the canal channel. The entire structure is built of limestone ashlar, a material that reinforces its solidity and its integration into the landscape.
The Requena Bridge is a point of special interest along the Canal de Castilla route, where you can closely observe the quality of its engineering, enjoy the landscape and understand how the canal adapted to the territory without interrupting the daily life of the region.
