The Almenara del Gato, built between 1759 and 1804, is part of the network of works on the Northern Branch of the Canal de Castilla, designed to regulate water for agricultural irrigation. Located in the municipality of San Cebrián de Campos, at kilometer 68.481, this small structure played a vital role in the controlled distribution of water flow, ensuring the orderly use of the canal in its immediate surroundings.
The structure has a square floor plan and small but precise dimensions, approximately 2.80 meters on each side and nearly 2.97 meters high. It is built of limestone ashlar, a common material in canal infrastructure due to its strength and durability. It is topped with a hipped roof, constructed of stone over a pressed brick dome, protected by a perimeter cornice that collects and drains rainwater. Although the stone cladding of the roof has been lost, part of the upper section remains, clearly revealing its original configuration and hydraulic function.
The watchtower is in a good state of preservation and maintains all of the original hydraulic work, which reinforces its heritage value as a direct testimony of enlightened engineering applied to water control.
