Cigales

Cigales, in the Pisuerga countryside, is a region where the land, wine, and transportation infrastructure have historically shaped its development. Covering a large municipal area, the town is the heart of the Cigales Designation of Origin.

The origin of the settlement dates back to the Vaccaean and Roman times; however, it was from the Middle Ages onwards that it consolidated as a town, reaching its moment of greatest splendor in the 16th century, with the projection of its wines as a prestigious product.

The historic center retains the imprint of that past. The large Church of Santiago Apóstol dominates the Plaza Mayor, next to the former Hospital of San Juan Evangelista and the Town Hall. The urban layout maintains the outline of the now-vanished medieval walls and preserves houses with coats of arms that reflect the town’s social and economic importance.

Cigales is also notable for its extraordinary ethnographic heritage linked to wine, with hundreds of underground cellars and cave houses inhabited until the 20th century. This legacy is complemented by modern wineries integrated into a vibrant wine tourism sector.

The territory of Cigales is largely explained by the presence of the Canal de Castilla, which crosses its surroundings and joins the Pisuerga River as a fundamental axis in the configuration of the agricultural landscape and historical communications.
