Canal de Castilla

From Melgar de Fernamental to Osorno

What to see

This section of the Castile Canal runs for 5.9 kilometers between Melgar de Fernamental and Osorno la Mayor. The route is simple and passes through a tranquil environment, where hydraulic elements stand out, such as the Abánades aqueduct and several irrigation sumps that demonstrate the agricultural functionality of the canal. The towpaths are in good condition, especially on the left bank, making it easy to travel on foot or by bicycle. Along the route, the integration of the canal into the rural landscape is observed, highlighting its historical importance and its role in water management in the area.

Practical information

  • Use the left bank, which is more comfortable and easier as the right bank has sections with undergrowth
  • Very close to the Abánades aqueduct, the settlement of San Carlos de Abánades was built, of which nothing remains today
  • Once at the Carrequemada bridge, crossing the road to the right, you reach Osorno in just under 1 kilometer
