From Alar del Rey (birthplace of the Canal de Castilla) to Herrera de Pisuerga

This initial stretch covers the little more than nine kilometers from the source of the Castile Canal, in Alar del Rey, to Herrera de Pisuerga. Along the route, you can discover important hydraulic elements such as locks, docks, and old mills. The landscape combines natural areas with agricultural areas and rich vegetation typical of the riverbank. Although some sections present difficulties and you have to change banks and cross the Pisuerga River, the route is not complicated and gives a first idea of the Canal’s operation and its historical role in the transport and economic development of the area.
